San Diego Go Club Plays On

Thursday June 18, 2020

The San Diego Go Club has been barred from its coffee house where it has met once a week on Tuesdays, from 7-11 p.m., for more than 25-years due to the Coronavirus, but the go players still compete. Local and more afield go players play on KGS on Tuesdays and simultaneously talk and see each other on the Discord app. The average online attendance is actually more than was showing up at the coffee house.

The Ninth Annual San Diego Go Championship was supposed to occur earlier this year, but when face-to-face competition was impossible, the club decided to have a free 5-round tournament online on KGS, in the San Diego Go Club room. Competition started three-weeks ago by 24-players (7-dan to 22-kyu) – more than half of whom are youth.. They will play one game a week for four weeks. The last round will be face-to-face whenever that is possible. There are no cash prizes, but the winner of the Open will have his name engraved on the club’s permanent plaque and win a trophy. Previous winners include Mark Lee (10-dan), Ari Saito (7-dan), Leran Zou (7-dan) and Yi Wang (6-dan).

After 3-rounds, Yixian Zhou 6d is the only undefeated player. In the Handicap section, four players remain undefeated: Anna Zhou 16k, Angelina Zhao 8k, Michael Sanders 7k, and Arunas Rudvalis 6k.

The San Diego Go Club has petitioned the AGA Board to allow this online competition to have its games AGA rated. The AGA Board is still deciding, but players are happy to have some meaningful competition none-the-less.

The 3rd annual California State Go Championship is still on the SDGC’s schedule, for the Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving. If face-to-face playing is not possible by then, the tournament will be held online, so that there will be a 2020 California Go Champion as well as an U16 girl and an U16 boy Champion. Everyone can compete, but only California residents can win the titles.

Your Move/Readers Write: Generous Yuans; Remembering Ogawa; sigma expansion rate

Monday December 2, 2019

Missing the generous Yuans: “The Go community will miss the Yuans (Yutopian to close, offering discounts and seeking potential successor),” writes Noni Redmond. “There was no one more generous than they were.  When we were running the young people’s go congress and I was looking for prizes for the many youth tournaments that were being run the Yuans would ALWAYS, always come forward with generous gifts for the winners.  I loved their Congress store just as much as I loved them. Thank you Yuan family I shall not forget you.”

Remembering Ogawa Tomoko: “Ogawa Tomoko was one of the three Japanese pro visitors to NYC in the 60’s, (In Memoriam: Ogawa Tomoko 6P)” writes Richard Dolen. “In their kimonos  they made a wonderful impression. I played her then, and she was very kind to American players when they visited Japan.”

Explaining the sigma expansion rate: “The 11/09/2019 issue (AGA July Board minutes, Nov. agenda posted) states that at the AGA’s July 19th board meeting, the board ‘moved to double the sigma expansion rate’ for ratings,” writes Frank Brown. “Curious about what this means.”
If you play a lot of games, you will see less of an impact of the change. However if you go for long periods of time between games, for example only play at Congress, you will see more of an impact. If you haven’t played a game for a long while, you will see more of a change in your rating based on your game results when you do play, since your rating may more likely have changed over longer periods of time.

Yoonyoung Kim 8P workshop hosted by Colorado a success

Thursday November 21, 2019

Colorado held its first pro workshop in long time when Yoonyoung Kim, 8p of Korea visited Denver November 2nd and 3rd. Players from both Colorado and Utah, 26 in total, participated. The highlight of the two-day event was when Ms. Kim played everyone in a team simul on the second day. Players gathered into six teams of three to four members each who could combine their Go knowledge on each move. Still, each team fell one-by-one against Ms. Kim, who is ranked in the top ten female players in Korea. “I could see everyone was really enjoying the simul by the wide smiles on their faces,” says organizer Eric Wainwright, “even as they went down in defeat.  I hope we can repeat this event in the near future.”

Yoonyoung Kim now resides in Montreal and teaches Go online and at local clubs.  You can find out more on her website at yybaduk.mozello.com. Find more pictures of the event at Google photos.

Hobnobbing — and studying — at the Nihon Ki-in Summer Go Camp

Sunday October 13, 2019

By Peter Schumer

The Nihon Ki-in Summer Go Camp was held from August 20 – 29 at the Nihon Ki-in headquarters in Ichigaya, Tokyo.  Twelve nations were represented by some thirty participants of all playing levels, with almost a third hailing from the United States and Sweden with four or five players each.  The camp was a great success and each year the organizers pack in more activities and events to add to its appeal.  There are daily league games for both kyu and dan-level players, informative lectures from top pros, pro simuls, and some friendship matches with local amateurs, as well as evening outings to various go salons.  Some of the guest lecturers included Ishida Yoshio, Takemiya Masaki, Antii Tormanen, Kobayashi Chizu, Xie Yimin, and the always popular Michael Redmond.

One outstanding highlight was watching the finals of the World Pair Go Championships held at a hotel in the lively Shinjuku district of Tokyo where several of us got to rub shoulders with the likes of Iyama Yuta and Cho Chikun.  Another special event was spending a few minutes sitting close to the players in the first game of the Meijin Championship at the stylish Chinzanso Hotel.  The players this year were the defending champion Cho U and the young challenger Shibano Toramaru.

I should add that the base price for the camp is extremely modest (about $150), but you can pay extra (silver and gold level) which includes some perks such as a special banquet and several additional simuls and lessons.  And despite all the go events, there is actually plenty of time for leisure activities and sightseeing.  The camp has a warm and friendly atmosphere and you can’t help but improve your play at least a little bit.  I highly recommend it.
