Pete Schumer named AGF Teacher of the Year

Friday July 23, 2021

“I’m quite overwhelmed and deeply humbled to be chosen as this year’s AGF Teacher of the Year,” said Schumer. “It’s quite an honor to join all the past recipients who have done so much towards the teaching, promotion, and dissemination of go.” Ordinarily a Teacher of the Year wins a free trip to the US Go Congress. As that is online this year, Schumer will be invited to the 2022 Go Congress in Estes Park as a guest of the AGF.

Schumer has been teaching a course on go at Middlebury College in Vermont since 1987.   “The course is more about introducing and promoting the history, spirit, and cultural aspects surrounding go as much as it is about improving one’s measurable ranking,” says Schumer.  “Self awareness and self-improvement is a large part of the course’s intent, but developing a deeper appreciation of the game and a humble respect for its great practitioners is even more important.   The course is also a writing course where students write and revise papers on the rules of go, on the theme of ‘Go as a Metaphor’, on the concept of ‘Collaboration versus Competition’.  The students also research a related East Asian art or tradition and give a presentation on their findings.  The ‘aha’ moment for many of them is when they discover the powerful connections and interdependencies between the spirit of go and that of the art they have been studying.”

Schumer has also created and run the Vermont Go Club, which has been active for over 30 years.  “The best way to promote go is through friendships and through such rich, joyful, meaningful get togethers.  In addition, I add one weekend meeting a month devoted to teaching new players about the game.   Again I am more interested in simply making them aware of this wonderful game, teaching them the basics, making sure they have a fun and positive experience (say beating me on a 9×9 board with a five stone handicap), and leaving it at that.  The analogy I like to give is that more people take art appreciation courses in college than become studio art majors.  Museums rely on an educated public that appreciates beautiful art whether or not most people can produce beautiful art.  Similarly, the American public seems to support and love football (based on the number of people who watch the Super Bowl, say), yet very few of us reach the level of even playing at the college level – or even care to.  We should continue to strive to educate the public about the game and foster a deep appreciation of it.  Our commitment and affection for the game can truly inspire others.”

“I want to thank the selection committee for their warm support and confidence in me.  I promise to redouble my effort to ‘pay it forward’ by continuing to pass along my knowledge and enthusiasm of the game to the younger generation,” adds Schumer. -Paul Barchilon, EJ Youth Editor. 2021 e-Go Congress Registration Closes July 15, Congress Begins July 17

Monday July 12, 2021

The e-Go Congress starts this weekend!  With registration still open and 436 registered players, including 352 players for the e-Go Open, 120 players for the daytime Blitz tournament, and 60 players for the Double-Digit Kyu Tournament, this year’s congress is turning out to be one of the most popular ever!  Haven’t registered yet, or want to change your registration?  Check out the e-Go Congress website!

Not sure if you can make it to the e-Go Congress this year?  Fortunately, no travel is involved, so you can feel free to register for one event or every event!  The e-Go Open is designed for people who are only available over the weekend, while the Blitz Tournament is accessible to US players available during the day, as well as overseas players who may not be able to attend events during the US evening.  The Double-Digit Kyu Tournament is a chance for developing players to meet each other and get in some good competition that might be hard to find elsewhere, while the Pair Go Tournament is a chance to enjoy a rengo game with a friend (mixed gender pairs expected). We also have a 9×9 Tournament on the first evening (July 17), and a Tsumego Challenge

Are you looking to do more than just play go?  Check out our online store for merchandise including t-shirts, hoodies, and tote bags, as well as special go-themed socks and all our goodies from last year!  This year we are also continuing the tradition of the Bob High Memorial Song and Poetry Contest with a deadline of Monday, July 19.  Interested in doing something artistic, but you aren’t much of a word person?  We have a new Picture a Go Player contest, with a deadline of Friday, July 23.  This contest is open to all players of any age, and includes nifty prizes for the winners, such as your design on a Congress t-shirt!

Looking to give back to the Go Community?  This year the AGF is going above and beyond with the 2021 E-Congress AGF Fundraiser.  The auction currently includes an 18cm floor board accompanied by agate and onyx stones, but look for more auction items to appear soon!

You can also keep up to date with all of the e-Go Congress happenings by watching our Twitch stream [link needed], including a broadcast of the Pandanet AGA City League Finals on Friday, July 23 at 8pm EDT.

New at this year’s eGo Congress: Leon Chen 4p’s Tsumego Challenge

Wednesday July 7, 2021

The 2021 eGo Congress will feature a brand new challenge designed to encourage players to participate in problem solving and improve their reading skills. Leon Chen 4p’s Tsumego Challenge was created and will be presented by Leon Chen 4P and Stephen Hu, and consists of 40 tsumego (life-and-death problems) of varying difficulty, generally ranked from easiest to most difficult. The problems are divided into five levels, with one puzzle of each level posted per day spanning over the course of the eight days of the congress. Participants have most of the day to work on the puzzles, submit their answers and (optionally) provide a brief justification of their thought processes. Solutions will be posted every evening during the live broadcasts on the official AGA Twitch channel, and the best challengers will be rewarded with free copies of Leon Chen 4p’s original tsumego collections, Spindrift and Planet.

Saturday July 3, 2021

As the number of registered attendees passes 300 players, congress staff is working hard to make this year’s tournaments great for the players. The event isn’t just about the tournaments, though!
The annual Bob High Memorial Song and Poetry contest opens this weekend. This annual event looks for the best go-related songs and poems from around the country, with winning entries featured online and in the closing ceremony.
A new contest, Picture A Go Player, has also launched, focused on the Go Congress logo. Check out the entry pages and design your own version of this year’s logo! The winner of the contest will see their logo become a t-shirt available for purchase by all players from the Merch Store.

Speaking of Merch Store … 2021 e-Go Congress shirts, hoodies, and mugs are now available from the online store! Play your games in style like you’re at the in-person congress. Order soon to have your swag available for the start of the events! Most items offer free shipping from the store. The new merch store will offer more items with the AGA logo on it soon.

Registration for e-Go Congress Tournaments

Monday June 28, 2021

This year, the e-Go Congress has enhanced the registration process to streamline the process for everyone!
In addition to a bunch of features you can’t see (but trust us, you and the Tournament Directors will appreciate them!), the site developers have updated the process to make a one-stop shop for you.  To register:

  • Go to https://www.gocongress.org/2021 and click “Start Here.”
  • Upon creating  your account, you will receive a confirmation email (this lets us know you’re not a bot).  Follow the directions to validate yourself as a human.
  • After you confirm you’re human, you can log into your account.
  • To add players, click “add attendee” inside your account.
  • You can now automatically connect your account to your AGA ID by using the nifty search feature on the first registration screen.
  • The e-Go Congress is free!  This means that your registration is not so much about choosing what options you want to pay for (like, do you want to share a bunk bed with a stranger, or have a luxurious hotel room to yourself?), but rather about signing up for the events in which you want to participate.
  • Use the congress registration form to register for all of the tournaments in which you plan to play.  This is the only way to register (but you can definitely come back and change your choices).  You should also put in your OGS/KGS/Pandanet ID so that TDs can use your ID to facilitate pairings.
  • Pair Go: Pair Go registration is a little special, since obviously we need to know who your partner is too.  All you have to do is click on the Pair Go Registration form (and know your partner’s information, if you already have one), and you’re good!

If you’ve already registered, you can sign in to your account at any time to check or change what you selected.  Still have questions?  Feel free to reach out to our registrar, Emil Meng, at registrar@gocongress.org, or Congress Director Steve Colburn at director@gocongress.org

Picture A Go Player

Monday June 28, 2021

There’s a new way to participate in the US e-Go Congress. Announcing “Picture a Go Player”, an art activity everyone can participate in. Help celebrate our unique perspectives by taking the 2021 US e-Go Congress Logo and making it your own.

Check out the Picture A Go Player page on the Go Congress Website for more details and to download a blank logo. To share your art, submit your artwork to Samantha Fede. We will display entries in the web gallery as they come in. A youth and overall winner, selected among entries submitted by July 23rd, will be announced at the e-Go congress closing ceremony. Limited edition merchandise with the winning design will be available for purchase.

Not artistic? No problem! Coloring is a great way to unwind, and an activity you can share with your children, even if you haven’t taught them go (yet!).
