Michael Redmond 9P and Chris Garlock will do their second livestream game commentary this week on the AGA’s Twitch channel on Wednesday December 11 at 7P EST. Monday night they streamed an exciting game between Redmond and Otake Hideo 9P, with in-depth commentary and interaction with viewers.
The EJ also plans to livestream from the First Southeast Asia GO Congress, which runs December 15-22 in Singapore. Be sure to follow the AGA’s Twitch channel and get notified of live streams.

Michael Redmond 9P and Chris Garlock return with their latest AlphaGo vs. AlphaGo game commentary, Game 32 of the popular series.
Redmond talks about the new era in Japan, as, after 30 years on the Chrysanthemum Throne, Emperor Akihito abdicated earlier this year — the first Japanese emperor to do so since 1817 — marking the end of the Heisei era and the inception of the Reiwa era, and his son and successor, Emperor Naruhito, was enthroned.
In Game 32, Black plays the mini Chinese Opening, which was also played in Game 31, with the colors reversed. “A very similar move comes up in this game,” says Redmond, “illustrating why the popularity of the mini Chinese has been reduced. It’s another exciting game in which, after a lot of fighting, it ends up in a half-point difference.” Redmond warns Garlock that “You’re going to be a bit more worried this time, I think, about the life and death of some of these groups.”
The series will continue with Friday releases this month, with AG-AG games 33 and 34, as well as a commentary on a game Redmond played with Ishida Yoshio last summer. AG-AG 34 was originally streamed live on Twitch on December 3; follow the AGA’s Twitter and Facebook feeds for announcements of future commentary streaming in this series. “The live streaming brings these commentaries to a broader audience and enables fans to interact with us in real time,” says Garlock. “Special thanks to Senior Producers Michael Wanek and Andrew Jackson for all their work on this series, and to new producer Steven Hu and editor Allen Moy.”

After a two-month hiatus for travel and other projects, Michael Redmond 9P and Chris Garlock have returned with their latest AlphaGo vs. AlphaGo game commentary, Game 31 of the series. “Black plays the Chinese Opening, which was very popular before AlphaGo,” Redmond says, “but because of a move AlphaGo came up with as White, it’s not as popular now. After that, we get to see Black doing neat attacks, and White ignoring them; business as usual, you could say.”

Michael Redmond 9p and the AGA E-Journal’s Chris Garlock take a break from their AlphaGo commentaries to take a look at a 
game that’s hundreds of years old, between Honinbo Shuwa and Inoue Genan Inseki (click here for the video). It was chosen because a position in 
the game reminds Redmond strongly of one in AG-AG 27. “Its not so much that they played the same moves, as that they got into a very similar game.” Redmond also considers Honinbo Shuwa “One of the greatest players in the history of go, even though his style wasn’t flashy and he wasn’t as popular as some other players.”
“Wow finally a historical match! I’m so glad right now,” said Alperen Yaşar. “I love the AlphaGo reviews (what I can understand of them) and I love when Michael reviews his own games,” said Synecdoche09, “but I think historical games are my favorite series on here.” “I’d love to hear more Go history!” adds Bill Dugger.

review the first half of the 28th game of the AlphaGo vs. AlphaGo selfplay games. The 50-game series was published by Deepmind after AlphaGo’s victory over world champion Ke Jie 9p in May 2017.
“There’s a lot packed into this game,” says Redmond. “We start with a slightly confusing fight on the lower side, things slow down for a bit, then there are all these weak groups and it gets a bit confusing to tell who’s attacking and who’s in trouble, so it’s a pretty interesting middle game.” “Buckle your seatbelts!” adds Garlock. Part 2 will be published next Friday, February 8.

Michael Redmond 9p, hosted by the AGA E-Journal’s Chris Garlock, continue their popular series with a review of the 27th game of the AlphaGo vs. AlphaGo selfplay games. The 50-game series was published by Deepmind after AlphaGo’s victory over world champion Ke Jie 9p in May 2017.
This game features two of the AG 3-3 invasions, a symmetrical shape and then “group after group appear on the upper side, right next to each other, and we’re going to have fun counting the number of groups,” says Redmond. “So it’s going to be that kind of a game.”
