EGF Pro Surma wins Samsung spot

Sunday July 9, 2017

European Go Federation pro Mateusz Surma 1p beat a strong field of players from outside the main go countries to win the Samsung Cup World Baduk Masters World Division and a spot in the main tournament.  The 12-player event, which took place at the Korea Baduk Association headquarter in Seoul’s brooding summer weather of heat, humidity and rain, included contenders from North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asian countries other than Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan.  For the first time, the World Division welcomed pros certified by the EGF and AGA, including Surma.  Surma received a bye in the first round, defeated fellow European Artem Kachanovskyi 1p in the second round and Canadian Gansheng Shi 1p in the semifinals.  Shi had a bye and beat a Thai player in the second round to advance to the semifinals. In the final, Surma faced the surprise winner of the other side of the table, Victor (Guang) Chow 7d of South Africa.  Chow, an active Internet player of long standing, had played in all the Samsung Worlds starting in 2014 without much success, but this year beat Canada’s Ryan Li 1p in round one, Israel’s Ali Jabarin 1p in round two and US player Eric Lui 1p in round three. Lui had beaten a Vietnamese amateur in round one and Pavol Lisy 1p of Russia in round two before facing Chow.  In the final match, according to Shi, Chow established an early lead but fell behind after making a big blunder. Surma will return in September for the main Samsung Cup tournament.

Slate & Shell to cease distribution of print books; will continue to release e-books

Monday July 3, 2017

Longtime go publisher Slate & Shell has announced that it is ceasing distribution of print books. 2017.07.03_S&S-logo“Our books will continue to be available in either print, through Amazon, or as e-books, through SmartGo,” said publishers Bill Cobb and Laurie Crammond. “There will continue to be new SmartGo e-books, and we will also do on-demand print books that can be ordered from Amazon—including a number of currently out of print books,” Cobb tells the E-Journal. “The next (new e-book) will be Yuan Zhou’s analysis of the AlphaGo-Ke Jie match.” The effective date for ending distribution is August 1. Until then, all of Slate & Shell’s books are marked down at least 50%, “most more, some much more,” added Cobb and Crammond. Orders must be received by August 1. “Please note that if you order several books, it would be wise to request priority shipping as the books have a greater chance of arriving in good condition,” S&S said in their announcement.

Researchers in China use appreciation of go to develop accurate chemical model

Sunday July 2, 2017

Zeolites, porous aluminosilicate minerals, are a key catalyst for industrial use due to their unique structure. As a result of their porous nature,2017.07.01 zeolites these minerals aid chemical reactions involving molecules directly bordering the zeolites, but carbon deposits can have a negative effect on surrounding molecules. As a result, models of Zeolites in 2d space behave similarly to some aspects of go, because the spaces bordering carbon deposits essentially act as liberties do in go. When an area of the model becomes completely surrounded by carbon deposits, those areas are inaccessible, despite not having carbon deposits themselves. Inspired by AlphaGo’s matches with Lee Sedol, Chemical Engineer Fei Wei and a team from Tsinghua University developed a detailed model that not only accurately described experimental results, but also allowed the team to predict the optimal acid density of a particular type of zeolite. A catalysis expert, Bert Weckhuysen, called the model “interesting and elegant” and added that he “directly see[s] a lot of potential applications.”

“Surrounding Game” screening updates

Sunday July 2, 2017

The Evanston Go Club has arranged their very own screening of The Surrounding Game. “It was so easy to set up!” said club president Mark 2017.07.01_surrounding-game-evanstonRubenstein. “I just followed the instructions under the film’s Host A Screening section, and the theater accepted our request. The only requirement is that we have to sell at least 73 tickets by July 5, or the screening will be canceled, in which case all tickets will be refunded.” At presstime 59 tickets still need to be sold; click here for tickets. The movie will be shown Wednesday, July 12, 2017 from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM at Century 12 Theatre, 1715 Maple Ave. Evanston, IL 60201.

“This is Evanston’s main movie theatre, and it’s really nice; stadium seating, free parking, and they sell beer and wine that you can bring into the theatre if you want to,” says Rubenstein. “Tell your friends and family about this unique event. It’s not just for go players; the film was made in order to reach a wider audience and introduce more people to the game. Remember, it won’t happen without your support, so reserve your tickets now!” said Rubenstein. “And for those of you who don’t live in the Chicagoland area and would like to promote the film, check out the website. It’s not often we have the opportunity to reach a mainstream audience like this, so let’s take advantage of it!” For any questions, please contact Mark Rubenstein at mark@evanstongoclub.org or 847-869-6020.

Update: The Surrounding Game will screen July 18 in Lehi, UT at Adobe from 12pm-1:30pm. The address is 3900 Adobe Way, Lehi, UT 84043. Contact: Devin Flake, dflake@adobe.com.

Lego go set idea seeks support

Saturday July 1, 2017

While several different Lego chess sets have been created and marketed in recent years, David Fazekas thinks the Danish plastic brick company 2017.06.30_lego-go-setis missing a big opportunity. “After Deep Blue defeated Kasparov in 1997 Lego had made several official Lego chess sets,” says Fazekas, promotion executive for the PaGoda Go Association in Hungary. “Now that Deep Mind’s AlphaGo has defeated both Lee Sedol and Ke Jie it’s time for Lego to acknowledge go players with a Lego Go set!” Fazekas has developed a Lego go set prototype and submitted it on the Lego Ideas site, where he needs to gather 10,000 supporters to advance to the next step in the approval process. Thus far he has 754 supporters. “A go Lego set would reach kids in every country,” says Fazekas, “please take a moment to click to show your support for this project.” The word “lego” is derived from the Danish words “leg godt”, meaning “play well”.
