2012 U.S.Go Congress Registration Opens

Sunday February 19, 2012

Registration for the 2012 U.S. Go Congress — August 4-11 in Black Mountain, North Carolina — is now open. “If you loved the 2006 Go Congress in Black Mountain, you are not alone,” says Congress Co-Directors Peter Armenia and Paul Celmer. “It was rated one of the best events in the entire history of the Go Congress, and our team of new and returning volunteers has worked hard to make 2012 even better.” In addition to the usual; cornucopia of go playing and professional instruction, the 2012 Congress features modest costs — with accommodations for all styles and budgets — a serene and scenic mountain setting, boutique arts and crafts shops in Black Mountain, nationally known brew pubs and a vibrant music and arts scene in nearby historic Asheville. Special Congress events like the “Fuseki Challenge” and the return of the legendary “Mountaintop Go” are also bound to be popular, as well as a variety of day off activities such as the Biltmore house and winery, whitewater rafting, brew pubs, zip lines, and Asheville city tours. This year’s Congress will also host the first-ever North American Go Symposium where academics and others will present studies on the literary, historical, mathematical, and cultural aspects of the game. “Registration costs will increase as the Congress date nears,” Armenia and Celmer warn, “so sign up early to ensure the accommodation style you desire.” Organizers are “working hard on making this Congress affordable and enjoyable,” the Co-Directors add. “Looking forward to seeing you on the mountain!” photo by Roy Laird

Chun-Hong Chen 8D Wins Phoenix Chinese Week Go Open

Monday February 13, 2012

To celebrate the Year of the Dragon, Phoenix Chinese Week and the Arizona Go Club jointly sponsored the 2012 Phoenix Chinese Week (PCW) Go Open on January 29.

Twenty two go players ranging in strength from 18k to 8D gathered at the Phoenix Chinese Cultural Center to compete in four divisions, Division A (2D and above), Division B (3K to 1D), Division C (8K to 4K) and Division D (9K and below).

After three rounds and nearly six hours of intensive competition, two winners were determined in each division. Chun-Hong Chen 8D demonstrated his superior strength by  sweeping all three games and won 1st place in Division A, while Jeremy Cain 4D won 2nd place. The winners for the other divisions are: Division B: Jonathan Holtrop 1k, 1st place; William Gundberg 1k, 2nd. Division C: Howard Liu 6k, 1st place; Richard Hardy 5k, 2nd place. Division D: Marty Luad 11k, 1st place; Guillermo Molano 11k, 2nd place.

“Another highlight was the outstanding performance of Junior player Howard Liu 6k,” reports local organizer Quan Li. “Liu played solid games and won three straight games to win 1st place in Division C. Two other junior players, Eric Lin 1d, and Jeffrey Luo 3k, also played very well. We also had a senior player, Demir Zoroglu 5k, who played some impressive games. All of us had great time, regardless of winning or losing. We’ll meet again for next year’s Phoenix Chinese Week Go Open.”

Thawing “The Body Electric” in Chicago

Monday February 13, 2012

“Love was in the air for our Winter tournament,” reports Chicago go organizer Bob Barber, who directed the February 11 “I Sing the Body Electric” tournament. “Three young women playing in the tournament are getting married this year: Laura Kolb, Lisa Scott, and Karoline Burrall. We even got to meet two of the fiances, one of whom, Patrick Allen, also joined in the games.”

The 42-player field was “a record breaking turnout for our new location, the Go Center in Arlington Heights,” Barber told the E-Journal. “For a while, I thought some might have to play outside in the 19 degree weather.  The beauty part, as our pal Chester Zawacki used to say, is that with so many players, the handicaps were small.”

Players attended from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky and Minnesota. “Those of us who attend the annual U.S. Go Congress were very happy to welcome Karoline Burrall (at left) to Illinois, where she’ll be studying and living for some years at least,” Barber added. “It was also gratifying to note that eight of the forty-two players were female.  Who said that go is an old man’s game?”

LA Go Club Moves to New Location

Monday February 13, 2012

Visitors to the LA Go Club recently might understandably have been worried by the vanished signs and tape over the door. Not to worry. Gary (Gun-ho) Choi’s venerable Koreatown playing location has moved to a new “and nicer” spot, reports local organizer Andy Okun. Although slightly smaller than the old location, the two-story mini-mall housing the club at 1144 S. Western Avenue, Suite 208, Los Angeles, CA 90006, 323-732-7871 — is a much newer building and has more parking available. In addition, the new playing room is non-smoking, Choi says. The regular playing hours are 10a to 9p and the club is “available on request 24 hours.” The club is also available for go events of whatever kind, and is available free for teaching. Until the signage is changed, look for the new club at the one reading “Baby Tomato Photo Studio.”

Upgrades and Book Additions from SmartGo Books

Monday February 13, 2012

More than two dozen – 27, to be exact – go books are now available in SmartGo Books 1.4. “In addition to including the full text and diagrams of the print versions, you can replay the moves directly in the diagrams,” reports author Anders Kierulf. A new feature includes inline diagrams, enabling many seemingly cryptic move sequences mentioned in the text to be tapped to display as a diagram (see image).

Some of the new books offered include “The Games of Fujisawa Shuko” by John Power (Kiseido), which features all 40 games played by Shuko in the Kisei title games, with their Go World commentary. “Tesuji and Anti-Suji of Go” by Sakata Eio (Yutopian): This out-of-print classic explores 61 tesuji models. “Learn to Play Go” by Janice Kim (Good Move Press): The complete five volumes of this series are now available. “Single Digit Kyu Game Commentaries” (volumes 1 and 2) by Yuan Zhou (Slate & Shell): A great look at common kyu-level mistakes in tactics and strategy.

The SmartGo Books app (for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch) is a free download, and a sample chapter of each book is free. The full books are available through in-app purchase at a significant discount to the print versions. Click here for more information.

2013 U.S.Go Congress Organizers Sought

Monday February 13, 2012

The American Go Association is looking for volunteers to organize the 2013 US Go Congress. “It’s a big job,” says Chris Kirchner, “but has great rewards for the organizers who step forward to join the elite class of Congress organizers,” like 2012 Congress Directors Paul Celmer and Peter Armenia. If interested, contact Kirschner at development@usgo.org.  “Be aware that the organizing will start right now,” Kirschner warns, “as you will need to determine a site and come up with a preliminary budget to present at the Congress this year.” Click here for details about what’s involved in organizing a Congress.
