NEW YORK GO CENTER OPEN TODAY: In response to popular demand, the New York Go Center is open for business today. The newly invigorated club is usually closed on Mondays, but because of the Martin Luther King holiday it will hold weekend hours, opening at 1P and remaining open until 10P. "In the spirit of Dr. King, and in keeping with our mission, we hope that players from all cultural and ethnic groups will come together for competition and good company at the Center on Monday," said club organizers. Next Sunday, January 21, the Center launches the "Master Player Series," where top level players will present a series of lectures on topics of interest. The first event features former US Champion Ron Snyder's lecture on "The Strategy and Tactics of Cutting" at the Center at 3P. The usual club fees apply but there is no additional charge. Seating is limited; register in advance by sending a message to nygc@usgo.org
DC BEATS ROCKVILLE 7-3: The Greater Washington Go Club again defeated the Rockville Go & Chess Club - despite loaning the rival club several players -- in the ongoing inter-club competition, this time by a score of 7-3. "We welcome a return match next month, Feb. 9th, at the Rockville site," says GWGC organizer Hal Small. "Perhaps we need to alter the handicaps? Or maybe Juan Pablo needs to stop trying to kill Trevor's groups?"
FENG YUN TO HOST 1ST USYGC QUALIFIER: All youth players -- regardless of citizenship or strength -- are invited to participate on both days of the Feng Yun Youth Go Tournament in New Jersey on January 20-21, the first qualifier in the new US Youth Go Championships (USYGC). Only United States citizens can qualify for the USYGC, but everyone will compete together for other prizes. There will be two age divisions, under 12 and under 18. Feng Yun will also provide a $400 scholarship to the 2nd Feng Yun Summer Go Camp in China for the winners in both the senior and junior groups. More info at http://fygc.com/FY_Go_Center/FYGT2007.htm
LIGC'S SEGAL MASTER POOL PLAYER: The Long Island Go Club's Andy Segal is not only steadily improving - already a strong 3k - but is also the world's #3 ranked "Artistic Pool" or trick shot player, reports LIGC organizer Milton Bradley. "Among his many titles, Andy was the 2005 World Artistic Pool Masters Champion, and just recently was a member of the 4-man US team that competed against Europe in the 2006 Artistic Pool World Cup at the famous Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. I just watched a tape of the competition, and as a former fairly good pool player myself -- I once ran 48 balls in straight pool -- what he can do with a cue ball literally defies belief." FENG YUN IN SARASOTA: Feng Yun 9P will hold a go workshop "in balmy Sarasota, Florida," reports the Sarasota Go Club's Larry Rabinowitz. The weekend workshop is set for February 17-18 with lectures and game analysis, beginning at 10A Saturday morning and ending at 4P Sunday afternoon. The cost is $150 and participation is limited. TEACHER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS OPEN: Nominations for this year's Teacher of the Year are now open. "The Teacher of the Year must be an example to other teachers both in teaching go and drawing young people into a love of the game," says None Redmond. AGA APPROVES FREE MEMBERSHIPS FOR PROS: In December 2006, the Board of the American Go Association unanimously approved a policy of offering complimentary annual AGA membership to professional go players who meet certain criteria. "The policy was generated out of the strong respect we hold for the well-established history of go in Asia," says AGA President Mike Lash. The criteria for the complimentary memberships include US permanent residence status or US citizenship. "The AGA believes such an approach, without seeking or adding any obligation of the eligible professionals, is a small but very important token of our appreciation for the contributions of their talents to promote Go in America. BURZO SWEEPS ROMANIAN ING QUALIFIER: Cornel Burzo 6d swept the Ing Memorial Cup qualifier in Bucharest, Romania, winning all six rounds in the January 13-14 event. Romania has now five players in the Ing Memorial Cup finals scheduled for March 1-4 at the European Go Center in Amsterdam: Burzo, Cristian Pop (who took 2nd last weekend), Lucian Corlan (who took 3rd), Catalin Taranu and Dragos Bajenaru. Also participating in the qualifier were young players from the Bistrita Palace of Children, 13-year-old Mihai Serban, the 2005 European Youth Champion, 14-year-old Laura Avram (best female result) and 8-year-old Tudor Berende, the Romanian National Youth Champion. RUI NAIWEI TAKES FIRST GAME IN MYEONGIN DEFENSE: Defending her Korean Women's Myeongin title against Lee Dahyeoi 3P, Rui Naiwei won the first game in the best-of-three-game match by five and a half points.
LEE SEDOL REPEATS IN WORLD OZA: Lee Sedol 9P of Korea defeated Cho U 9P of Japan 2-1 to win the international Toyota Denso World Oza for the second consecutive time. Cho won the first game by just half a point and Lee came back to take two by resignation. The winner's prize is over $300,000 US, including a new car. Lee Changho won the first edition of this biannual event in 2002, so it has only been won by Korean pros. Chang Hao 9P of China was runner-up the first two times. The North American representatives this time were Feng Yun 9P, who lost to Hane Naoki 9P of Japan in the first round, and MingJiu Jiang 7P, who lost to Cho Sonjin 9P of Japan in the first round. The European reps, all of whom also lost in the first round, were Guo Juan 5P of the Netherlands, Alexander Dinerchtein 1P of Russia, and Iliya Shikshina 6d of Russia.
JAPANESE SURGE IN WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL TEAM EVENT: In the second stage of the Jeongganjang Cup, a team match between Japan, China, and Korea, the Japanese player Mannami Kana 3P has now won three games in a row, defeating Kim Hyeoimin 4P of Korea to end the first stage in Baejing, China, and both Wang Xiangyun 1P of China and Hyun Mijin 4P of Korea to start the second stage in Seoul, Korea. This leaves the Japanese team with four members, while the Koreans have only two and the Chinese three. The Japanese have yet to win this event. The Koreans and the Chinese have won it twice each.
GU LI SWEEPS TO MINGREN THREEPEAT: Gu Li 9P swept challenger Zhou Ruiyang 4P 2-0 to hold on to his Mingren title for a third year, winning the first game by a point and a half and the second by resignation. Li, who also holds the Chinese Tianyuan title, which he has now held for four years in a row, has a ways to go before matching Ma Xiaochun 9P's record of winning this title thirteen times in a row, starting in 1989. Zhou is still a teenager and seems likely to break through to win a title soon.
