ERIC LUI 2-2 IN WORLD AMATEUR: Eric Lui 7d from Maryland, the US representative in a new international amateur baduk championship in Korea, is 2 and 2 at the end of the fourth round. Amateur go players from 66 countries and territories around the world are now participating in the 1st Korea Prime Minister Cup International Baduk Championships, being held October 20-27 in Lee Changho's home town of Jeonju City, Korea. Korea, China and the Netherlands are leading after 4 rounds of this new amateur tournament, organized by the Korea Amateur Baduk Association to promote international friendship and cultural exchange. Eric Lui (US) lost to Taiwan in the first round, then beat Finland and Brazil before falling to Japan and now stands 14th, with 4 rounds to go. Yongfei Ge (Canada) is currently 4th, with only one loss. Other notables are T. Mark Hall (Great Britain) in 29th place and Carlos Gonzalez ( Mexico) in 35th place, both with 2 wins. European reps include Cristian Pop 7d of Romania, Ilya Shikshin 6d of Russia, Geert Groenen 6d of Netherlands, Pal Balogh 6d of Hungary, and Ondrej Silt 6d of Chechzia. COTSEN OPEN SET FOR THIS WEEKEND IN LA: This weekend's Cotsen Open in Los Angeles features $3,000 in prizes, free registration, free lunch, pro game reviews and more. $1,500 goes to the top three players, while another $1,500 goes to the three go clubs whose members rack up the most points overall. All players who turn out both days receive a free limited AGA membership and professional go players Yilun Yang 7P and others will review and comment games; players who pre-register get a free luxury lunch buffet both days. Plus, organizers promise, "While you toil away at your games two masseuses will be making the rounds to ease the tensions that arise in your shoulders (when you discover that your big group really doesn't have two eyes.)" The E-Journal will be on hand to cover the tournament again this year, broadcasting Board 1 games live on IGS and KGS, with live game commentary. YOUTH GO & PUMPKIN CLASSIC: Just up the coast from the Cotsen, the 9th Ing's Cup Youth Goe Tournament will be held this Sunday in Sunnyvale, CA (in the Bay Area). Click on http://www.GoMasters.com for details. Meanwhile, East Coast players can join the Pumpkin Classic in Arlington, VA on Saturday, October 28, 2006; contact Allan Abramson allango@igc.org 703.684.7676

10K BY '07?: American Go E-Journal readership hit the 9,000 mark last week, as go players around the world continue to sign up for the free weekly go news ezine. First published in April 2000, the E-Journal has steadily expanded both content and readership, adding world go news, game commentaries, go reviews, columnists and a second edition. You can help make the world's largest English-language go publication even bigger and better by passing the EJ along to fellow go players, who can sign up for the free edition at http://www.usgo.org/e-journal.html  The Friday Games Edition is just $20 at http://www.usgo.org/org/application.html  (free to members of the AGA or any national go organization; email journal@usgo.org for details).

HANE TO PLAY KOBAYASHI IN KISEI CHALLENGER FINAL: Hane Naoki 9P and Kobayashi Satoru 9P will play a one-game match to determine the challenger for Kisei title holder Yamashita Keigo 9P. Four players ended up with 4-1 records in the double league to determine the challenger, but Hane and Kobayashi won out over Cho U 9P and Kato Atsushi 8P on tie breaks. Hane held the Kisei title for two years in 2004 and 2005, while Kobayashi held in for a single year in 1995. Yamashita took the title from Hane last year and also held it for a year in 2003.

IT'S LEE VS. CHOI IN KOREAN KBS CUP FINAL: Lee Sedol 9P will face off with Choi Cheolhan 9P in the best-of-three-game finals of the 25th KBS Cup. Along with Lee Changho 9P and Park Yeongeon 9P, these are considered the top Korean players at the moment. Both Lee Sedol and Choi hold current international titles, the Toyota Denso World Oza and the Zhonghuan Cup respectively. Choi defeated Yoo Changhyuk 9P and Lee Changho 9P to get into the finals. Lee Sedol lost to Lee Changho early on and went into the loser bracket where he also had to defeat Yoo Changhyuk to reach the finals against Choi. The first game is today.

YUN FACES PARK IN KOREAN KUKSU FINAL: Yun Junsang 4P will meet Park Yeonghun 9P in the best-of-three-game finals of the 50th Kuksu. The Kuksu is the oldest Korean tournament. Park is barely in his twenties, but he won the international Fujitsu while a teenager in 2004 and has won several other titles, including the Korean Kisung, which he has held for the last two years. Yun is still a teenager and hasn't won a title yet, but he was the challenger for the Kisung in 2002.

CHO U DODGES ANOTHER BULLET IN MEIJIN: Cho U 9P, down 3-1 in the defense of his Meijin title against Takao Shinji 9P and current Honinbo, came back to win Game Five to keep his hopes alive with a 3-2 score in the best-of-seven-game match. Takao got two of his three wins by a mere half point; if that combined total of one point had gone to Cho he would already have his third year as Meijin safely in hand. The Honinbo is the only one of the big seven titles in Japan that Takao has won. Cho currently holds five Japanese titles, including three of the top seven.
