SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL TOURNAMENT: With an astonishing seven tournaments (perhaps a one-weekend record) scheduled across the country this weekend - from Amherst (MA) to Houston (TX) to Seattle (WA) and more - there's probably a tournament near you! Most are 1-day events that local organizers have worked hard to put together, so if you have a chance to play or even just drop by, it'll be a great way to show your support and have fun. See WEEKEND GO ACTION below for details.

OLYMPICS GO GOLD: In a preliminary step to Olympic recognition, reports Terry Benson, the International Go Federation has been accepted as a full member of the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), at GAISF's meeting in Seoul on April 7, attended by 900 delegates. "Hearty congratulations to the IGF office," says Benson. Find out more about GAISF at http://www.agfisonline.com/

CHEN YAOYE EVENS SCORE IN LG CUP: Young Chen Yaoye 5P of China kept his chances alive in the international LG Cup by defeating China's number one player Gu Li 7P in the third and fourth games of their title match to even the score at 2-2. Details on Monday.

CHO CHIKUN KEEPS JUDAN: Cho Chikun 9P beat Yamashita Keigo 9P by a score of 3-1 to hold on to his Judan title. Details on Monday.

WEST COAST CAMP DEADLINE APPROACHES: In the June issue of Shonen Jump, Janice Kim's column includes information about both Youth Go Camps as well as the U.S. Go Congress. Hikaru no Go update: in the wake of the Young Lions tournament, the Insei prepare for the pro tournament, Seiji Ogata is challenging Kuwabara Hon'inbo for the title of Honinbo, and Akira Toya is promoted to 2 dan. Check it out at your local bookstore. Kids: don't miss out on this year's West Coast Go Camp: there is an Early Bird discount of $50 off the already low fee. Applications available at www.usgo.org/gocamp. Is cost an issue? Contact the camp for scholarship applications.

GAME COMMENTARY: Overplays and Questions
Black never really recovers from an early overplay in today's game commentary from the January play-off between the Japanese and Chinese winners of the Agon Cup tournaments. Gu Li 7P, Chinese Agon Cup winner plays Iyama Yuta 7P, the Japanese Agon Cup winner. The commentary is by Yu Ping 6P, translated from World of Weiqi (published 2/1/2006) by Dave Wong 2d.
Today's bonus file is the 14th installment of Haruyama Isamu 9P's "Questions from Actual Play," translated by Robert McGuigan.

GO REVIEW: The Middle Game of Go: Volume 1
By Sakata Eio 9P
Published by Yutopian Enterprises; www.yutopian.com
144 pages, $22
Reviewed by Lawrence Ku 2d
"The Middle Game of Go" by Sakata Eio is the first book in a series dealing with middle game strategy and thinking. Sakata uses his own games to demonstrate key points and thinking throughout the middle game of go. There are four games that illustrate different approaches in different situations.
Studying this book helped improve my middle game; I am a player who falls behind frequently after the middle game ends, but after reading this book, I had better my success in the middle game. "The Middle Game" is great because it shows all of the variations of a move, not just the commonly used ones. Although all games covered are professional level, they are so well-explained that even kyu players should be able to understand. However, this book may be too advanced for mid-kyu players, and I recommend it for mainly for high-kyu to shodan players.
