EAST COAST GO CAMP FEATURES REDMOND: Michael Redmond 9P will be the resident pro at this year's East Coast Youth Go Camp, reports organizer David Dinhofer. Redmond's wife Xian Xian 3P will also attend the camp, which runs August 5-12 in Delaware Water Gap. PA. Dinhofer promises "Tubing down the Delaware, water parks and hikes in the park, and more go than you have ever played and lots of fun go activities you wouldn't believe." FULL MEMBERSHIP HITS NEW HIGH: Fueled by a special promotion (see story above), membership in the American Go Association bounced up to 2,179 in March, just one short of the 2,180 record high in January. The 1,719 Full members is a new record, as are the 41 Life Members, a jump of three in just one month (all Life Members will soon be enjoying a special collection of Go Worlds as thanks for their support). In other March membership news, there were 26 new youth members, chapters were down 2 to 139 and sustainers were up 1.

CHO ONE AWAY FROM JUDAN WIN: Cho Chikun 9P won the second game to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match to retain his Judan title against challenger Yamashita Keigo 9P. Details on Monday.

CHOI & LEE IN DEAD HEAT IN MAXIM CUP: Choi Cheolhan 9P took the second game of the Maxim Cup title match against Lee Sedol 9P by 1.5 points to tie up the best-of-three match at 1-1. Details on Monday.

GAME COMMENTARY: Emotional Workout
       In today's commentary on a game by Shodan Challenger Ian Davis 2k, Joey Hung 8d says "Black did very well in this game," from the 2006 Irish Open. "He looks at the big picture most of the time, but now and then he makes some big mistakes that allow White to come back. Black needs to work on his emotions and not be over-cautious."
       Today's bonus file is the 13th installment of Haruyama Isamu 9P's "Questions from Actual Play," translated by Robert McGuigan.

GO REVIEW: Appreciating Famous Games

      This is an amazing introduction to the history of Japanese go and the study of pro games. Although it doesn't give you any specific tips on how to study a pro game, it is a very extensive commentary of ten
historical games. The comments are directed to the mid to strong single-digit kyu level, but practically anyone could enjoy the book for its historical aspect.
      Famous Games is easy reading even without a board in front of you. I managed to read most of it in the many hours of plane rides from Tokyo to Providence. Most diagrams contain only 5-10 moves of the game so it's easy to keep track; this probably also builds reading and visualization skills.
      I'm happy with any book that will suddenly instill the desire to try out something new that I've learned! At 3k, this type of book is now few and far between and probably limited to game collections and commentary. I'm glad that this introductory level commentary is available in English.
