CHINESE AND KOREANS FACE OFF IN SAMSUNG SEMI-FINALS: Th
e two games of the semi-finals in the international Samsung Cup will both have a Korean vs. a Chinese player, although Lee Sedol 9P is out. Details on Monday.
ZHANG XUAN DOMINATES JIANGQIAO CUP: Zhang Xuan 8P has won the Women's Jiangqiao Cup in China yet again. Details on Monday.
PAIR GO COMES TO ROCKIES: The upcoming December 3 Pair Go Tournament in Denver is a rare chance to play the game that already enjoys immense popularity in Japan and other countries. "Pair Go beginners need not fear," assures organizer Jasmine Sailing, "a demo of turn-order and other basics will be provided at the beginning of the tournament, courtesy of Janice Kim." CARY LEADS TEAM LEAGUE: The undefeated Cary Go Club (1-0) tops the standings in the second AGA Chapter Team League, with eight teams signed up. Miami is second (1-1) and the Penn Go Society is 3rd (1-2). Other teams include Team Sente (Joey's Go School), the Menlo Park Go Club, UNT Team Sabaki (Denton Go Club), Team B (Triangle Go Group) and the Ventura County Go Club. GROWING IN VT: "The patterns on the boards suggest flowing water, huddled marbles, or Jackson Pollock gone minimalist" wrote Dan Mackie in a November 12 report on the Upper Valley (VT) Go Club in the Upper Valley News. "We had some new people show up already," reports club member Karen Plomp. "They had read the article and wanted to check us out. Pu blicity!" EJ HITS TRIPLE DIGITS: Today's issue #100 marks the first time in its six-year history that the American Go E-Journal has published in the triple-digits. GAME COMMENTARY: Triple-Header Celebration
In honor of today's first-ever triple-digit issue #100 of the EJ, we have three exciting top games from around the world:
First up is last month's semifinal game in the 10th LG Cup, with Lee Sedol 9P of Korea taking White against Gu Li 7P of China. Alexandre Dinerchtein 1P takes a look at the October 19 game, which features a big swap and some fiercely-fought endgame play on both sides. Dinerchtein's commentaries on both pro and strong amateur games are available by subscription at his website at www.go4go.net, along with a
lot of free material about the world of go.
Next to bat is the dramatic final round of the 2005 Texas Open, the edge-of-the-seat battle between Jie Li 9d and Rui Xie 7d on October 30 in Navasota, Texas. Xie seems to gain an early huge territorial advantage and kibitzers (the game was broadcast live on IGS) were convinced Li - who had been undefeated in four previous Texas Opens - could not recover without killing a live-looking center group. See how Li uses the threat to kill to methodically tighten the noose until Xie's advantage slips away.
Finally, two of The Netherland's best players face off in Game 2 of the 2005 Dutch Championship playoff. Merlijn Kuin 5d played Frank Janssen 6d in April in the city town hall in Almere, The Netherlands, Janssen's hometown. The game originally appeared in the Dutch Go Journal.
