CALLING LOUISIANA & MISSISSIPPI: If anyone has news of how go club organizers in Louisiana and Mississippi are faring (and what help they need), we'd like to he ar it. The clubs are The Cajun Go Club and Crane's Nest Go Club in New Orleans, LA and the LSU Go Club in Baton Rouge, LA; the Mississippi Go Society in Pelahatchie, MS and the Tupelo Go Club in Tupelo, MS (we're not aware of any clubs in Alabama). DOUBLE FENG YUN: This month, Feng Yun 9P has a public simul and starts the next round of classes. The simul will be held Saturday, September 17 at the Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival in Edison, NJ. Classes at the Feng Yu n Go School begin September 11. The Mid-Autumn Festival will be held at the Edison Municipal Building (on the corner of Rt. 27 and Municipal Blvd., next to Clarion Hotel ) from noon to 10P and features "Lots of vendors, performances, activities and food," says Feng Yun. "We expect 15,000 people will join the event." Feng Yun will play 10 simul games from 6-8:30P; anyone who would like to play must pre-register with Ivy Lee at ivylee@sino-monthly.com Registration is $10. Ther e are two Sunday classes at the Feng Yun Go School: Class A runs 9:30-10:30A and Class B from 10:45-11:45A. GUO JUAN RETURNS TO WOODLANDS: Guo Juan 5P, the Netherlands-based professional go player, will hold her fourth workshop on Columbus Day weekend (10/7-10) at the Woodlands in the New York State's Catskill Mountains. The workshop st arts with a lecture late on Friday evening (Oct. 7) and ends Monday, Oct. 10 after lunch. "The format is the typical workshop format with a mixture of lectures, games and game analysis," reports organizer Jean Claude Chetrit. ROB VAN ZEIJST -- THE E-JOURNAL INTERVIEW: "When I left Holland, I told my parents I was going to be in Japan for just 3 weeks," Rob van Zeijst tells the E-Journal. "However, I didn't end up returning to the Netherlands for another two and a half years." The Dutch-born van Zeijst writes a popular weekly go column "The Magic of Go" for "The D aily Yomiuri" newspaper, is a 7-dan in the European Go Federation, four-time European go champion, an instructor for the Japan Go Association, and founded the go club at Ben's Cafe in Takadanobaba, Tokyo, Japan. Nassar, a Philadelphia-based biologist who visited Japan this summer for a 5-week go pilgrimage, interviewed van Zeijst for the E-Journal on June 30 at the Indoya Restaur ant, Takadanobaba in Tokyo, Japan.
MCGUIGAN'S BACK! We're tremendously pleased to welcome Robert McGuigan back as an E-Journal contributor this week. McGuigan's translations of the writings of the beloved Nakayama Nor iyuki 6P made the "What's Wrong with that Move?" series a classic of go literature. McGuigan is now tackling Haruyama Isamu 9P's "Questions from Actual Play," a new series of studies translated from "Jissen ni tsuyoka naru 80 dai (80 questions for getti ng strong at real play)" published by the Nihon Kiin in 1979. Haruyama Haruyama will be familiar to many of our readers as the author of "Basic Techniques of Go."
AGA MEMBERSHIP STREAK SNAPPED: Membership in the American Go Association dipped in A ugust, after 8 consecutive months of steady increases. The 21-person drop in overall membership erases the last two months of gains, but total membership remains over the 2,000 mark with 2,072 members. Full, Limited, Youth, Sustainers all had slight drops while Chapters and Life Members held steady. "While this drop is disappointing, I don't see any cause for alarm," says AGA President Mike Lash. "We fully expect to rebound as our new marketing program takes hold," he added, encouraging AGA chapters to submit membership-building proposals. Details at president@usgo.org

For your enjoyment over the long holiday weekend ahead, we've got two games and t
he first in a brand-new series. Hot off the boards is a August 26 semi-final game in the Junior division of the recent World Youth Goe Championship in Barcelona between 8-year-old Calvin Sun 3d of the US and 10-year-old Liao
Xing-Wen 5d of China. Liao went on to win the Junior division title; Sun has been playing go for about two years. The commentary - thorough as always - is by Yilun Yang 7P.

orean Wonik/Sibdang Cup as Yoo Changhyuk 9P takes on Mok Jinseok in an exciting August 17 game that hinges on whether White can survive in Black's ocean of a moyo. The commentary is by Alexandre Dinerchtein, whose commentaries on pro and amateur games are
available by subscription on the go4go.net web site, which also contains a lot of current information on pro go.

gan in translation from "Jissen ni tsuyoka naru 80 dai (80 questions for getting strong at real play)" by Haruyama Isamu 9P (Haruyama is the author of Basic Techniques of Go). McGuigan translated another series earlier, based
on writings of Nakayama Noriyuki 6P, called "What's Wrong with that Move?" This material is used by permission of the Nihon Kiin which published the original text in 1979. Haruyama says that his primary audience is players who are aiming for shodan.
